Born September 4, 1941 in Lumberton, NC, he was a son of the late John William Harrelson and Madeline Phillips Odum. He was a 1959 graduate of Lumberton High School.
Mr. Harrelson retired from the U.S. Military after 37 years of service. During his service to our country, he served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, and was involved in Vietnam and Desert Storm. Following his retirement, Mr. Harrelson worked for the city of Lumberton, before relocating to Mint Hill. After relocating, he enjoyed driving a school bus for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, where he would dress as “Santa” during the Christmas season.
Mr. Harrelson was a member of Mint Hill Masonic Lodge #742 AF&AM, Oasis Temple, and the Oasis Shriner Clown Unit, where he was affectionately known as “Stripes.”
In addition to his parents, Mr. Harrelson was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Britt, and two brothers, Archie Carlton Harrelson and Hansford Ray Harrelson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Harrelson; his children, Ashley Forte-Teyuco and husband, Armando, of Fayetteville, NC, Ryan Harrelson of Clinton, NC, Michael Barker and wife, Megan, of Hampstead, NC, David Barker and wife, Tammy, of Hahira, GA, and Patrick Harrelson of AL; his sister, Jenny Wynn and husband, Russell, of Lumberton, NC; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 11:00 until 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 13, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill. A memorial service to celebrate his life will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Lynn Upchurch officiating.
