Walter William Cosby Jr.

Walter William Cosby Jr., born September 9, 1928, passed away on February 28, 2019 with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and devoted care-takers at his side. His family is grateful for the amazing care he received at Plantation Estates.

Born in Washington DC, the second child of Walter and Laura Cosby, he grew up on Irving Street in Arlington, Va. His big sister, Dixie was 8 years old when he was born. As a child, Bill walked to the local elementary school, participated in Cub Scouts and set up track and field events in the back yard. He graduated from Washington Lee High School.

Bill attended Tennessee Wesleyan and East Tennessee University before enlisting in the Air Force. He served most of his time at the U.S. air base in the Azores. After returning to civilian life, Bill went to work for PEPCO, the local power company in the DC area, where he stayed until his retirement 35 years later. Bill became a Mason in 1955.

Bill had his greatest stroke of luck when a friend of his Aunt Kit set him up on a blind date with his future wife, Molly Kennette. They married on November 24, 1956, settled in Springfield VA, and had their only child, Doug.

Bill was a devoted husband and father, taking his family on many summer trips. He was active in the Boy Scouts as an adult, stewarding Troop 990 on camping adventures and trips to summer camp. The Boy Scouts awarded Bill the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow in recognition of his selflessness and countless volunteer hours. In retirement, Bill frequently volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

When Bill and Molly retired, they spent much of the year at the family home in Tyro, VA. This is where Bill was most at ease. He was a member of Massie’s Mill Presbyterian Church and spent many happy hours with “the guys” at the Winton Country Club where he learned to play golf at the age of 70. Retirement was good to Bill. In addition to long stretches at Tyro, Bill and Molly traveled the world visiting New Zealand, China, Mexico and many countries in Europe.

Bill is survived by Molly, his wife of 62 years; his son, Doug Cosby, daughter-in-law, Page Lee; and grandchildren, Isabel and Lee. He is predeceased by his sister, Dixie.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held Saturday, March 16th, at 1:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center Clubhouse of Plantation Estates (606 Birch View Drive, Matthews, NC) with Chaplain Sara Stubbs presiding. A reception will follow the service.
