Virginia Robbins Roberts, of Charlotte, NC, lovingly known as Ginger, Mom, and Mimi, passed away peacefully at home on May 14, 2016. Bill, her husband and best friend of 51 years, and her seven children were at her side.
Ginger was born in New York City and was raised in Scarsdale, NY. After one date in high school, Ginger finally agreed to a second date with Bill years later and they married on August 18, 1964. Bill brought her coffee in bed every morning for the rest of her life. They raised their children together in West Hartford, CT, Flossmoor, IL, and finally in Charlotte, moving to the city in 1987. Ginger was devoted to her children and took great pleasure in raising them, volunteering at their schools and creating a welcoming home that was a social hub for her family. Over the years and generations, she sang thousands of lullabies, read countless bedtime stories, and shared prayers and words of wisdom through each stage of their lives.
Ginger loved to travel with Bill and her children to the beach and overseas. An Anglophile at heart, she especially enjoyed their many visits to England. She also liked to try new things, such as waterskiing in her 40s, snow skiing in her 50s, riding a camel in Morocco in her 60s, and branding cattle in Kansas in her 70s. Above all, she enjoyed the simple pleasures of daily life, from the sun on her face to walks around the block to a strong cup of black coffee.
Ginger adored her grandchildren, and they adored her. She was an avid card player, yet Ginger somehow managed to lose every game of Go Fish she played with them. Although Ginger was small in stature, she always had ample room on her lap for a grandchild looking for a snuggle…as one invariably was.
Ginger cherished her friends. Whether playing tennis or bridge, attending book or garden club, or getting together with her lunch bunch, her friends were very important to her.
Ginger was preceded in death by her parents Virginia and Edward Robbins and by her grandson James Vaughn Ballard. She will be terribly missed by her husband Bill, son Ragan and daughter-in-law Kirstin Roberts, daughter Beth and son-in-law Kirk Bleavins, daughter Jane and son-in-law Todd Presser, daughter Alyce Mazeine, daughter Katie and son-in-law Steve Valeika, son Billy and daughter-in-law René Roberts, son Jimmy and daughter-in-law Jennifer Roberts, and her 17 grandchildren.
Her family would especially like to acknowledge the exceptional care and support Ginger received from Dr. Lorri Ayers. A private memorial service will be held for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crisis Assistance Ministry of Charlotte.
