Robert Patterson Mayberry Jr.

Robert Patterson Mayberry, Jr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 10, 2012 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Bob was born on September 10, 1960 in New Castle, Pa. and lived in western Pennsylvania until he was recruited to play football for Clemson University. Bob played offensive guard and tackle for the Tigers from 1979-1982 and played on the 1981 National Championship team. The evening of the Orange Bowl held special significance in Bob’s life, as it was the first date he had with his future wife, Sheryl. In 1982, Bob was awarded the South Carolina Jacobs blocking trophy. While at Clemson, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was also a member of the honorary service fraternity Tiger Brotherhood.

In 1983 Bob received a BS degree in Administrative Management and joined his father at Bob Mayberry Chrysler City in Monroe, NC, which grew into Bob Mayberry Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Bob was most recently President of Bob Mayberry Hyundai.

Bob was a devoted servant to his community, and in Union County served on the Board of South Piedmont Community College, the Board of Community Health Services, and the Board of the United Way. He also served as a mentor at Walter Bickett Elementary School. As an Elder at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Bob served on the Weekday School Board, the Finance Committee, and volunteered with Room in the Inn. Bob had a special calling and satisfaction in working with youth and greatly enjoyed his volunteer work with Boy Scout Troop 17. He coached numerous youth sports teams but most of all loved coaching South Park Pop Warner football and passing on his love of the game. Bob had the gift of boundless energy and the wisdom to know what to do with it. He was a lifelong learner and sought to share his own life lessons with others by example. In the words of St. Francis of Assisi, Bob lived to “preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.” For his family, Bob was the center of fun, and while missing him beyond measure, the fun will continue in his honor and memory.

Bob is survived by his wife, Sheryl; his children, Caroline, Sloane, and Miles; his parents, Robert Mayberry, Sr. and Vi Mayberry; his sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Pat Vaughn; niece London Vaughn and nephew Jack Vaughn; and also many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the large family he so enjoyed.

The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Dr. James Boyd and the devoted nurses at Oncology Specialists of Charlotte; Dr. James Abbruzzese at MD Anderson; and the Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care team.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church and the family will receive friends following the service in the Outreach Center.
