Richard Alexander Lucey of Charlotte passed away at Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday, October 2, 2016. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on October 28, 1941, the son of the late John F. and Margaret A. Lucey. Upon graduation from Fairfield University in Connecticut, Dick continued on to earn a Juris Doctorate degree at Fordham University Law School in New York. Just after law school, he worked in New York City and later accepted a transfer to Charlotte, NC in 1970, a place he and his family would call home. After pursuing a private law practice, he was asked to serve as the attorney for the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte. Dick also spent much of his time and service as a court-appointed attorney in juvenile court. Dick and his family became parishioners of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in 1970 where he has been an active member. He was also a cantor and dedicated member of the St. Vincent’s choir. His passions included golfing, gardening, Red Sox, Panthers, and Notre Dame football.
In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his sister Peggy and sister-in-law Nancy. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jo and their six children, Kathy (Joe), Kevin (Amanda), Jim (Hayley), Danny, Margaret, and Kelly (Alexis); by grandchildren, Christopher, Stephen, Brian, Laura, Davis, James, Mary Elizabeth, Sean, and Amos; and by his siblings Jack, Mary (Charlie), Bill (Norma) and brother-in-law Eamon.
A prayer service will be held on Thursday, October 6 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service – Pineville Chapel 10500 Park Road. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 7 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church 6828 Old Reid Road Charlotte at 3:00 PM followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Church in memory of Richard A. Lucey.
