Dick Chew passed away early Thursday morning February 18, 2021 at The Charlotte Assisted Living facility in Pineville, NC. He was comforted by his loving family and care from The Charlotte and Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte NC.
Born April 6, 1929 in Crawfordville, GA he was the second son of Harry Hayes Chew Jr and Elizabeth Asbury Chew. He attended school in Crawfordville, the Georgia Military College and then received his business degree as a Phi Delta Theta at the University of Georgia.
Dick served his country as a second lieutenant (tank commander) in the Army during The Korean War. He then went on to work for Crawford and Company for 35 years as a regional manager.
Dick and Jean faithfully attended Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church. He loved flying and piloted many trips in his Cessna 172 to go fishing with friends or take family trips. He was an accomplished woodworker with a workshop that was any handyman’s dream. He enjoyed refinishing antiques or building completely new items. Dick was always exceptionally good with his hands as he repaired cars, boats, airplanes, appliances, etc. He always made sure his vehicles and those of his family members were checked out before travel. He also had a keen eye for style and always put on his best for every occasion. Dick was very generous, loving and supporting of his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Yonah Jean Chew, three children, Richard Hayes Chew (Patty) in Atlanta GA, Brian Evans Chew (Denise) in Charlotte NC and Allyson Chew Dantino (Fran) in Matthews NC, seven grandchildren; Richard Sommer Chew, Whitney Chew Lentz, Brian Evans Chew Jr., Eric Asbury Chew, Joshua Patrick Chew, Ashley Elizabeth Chew, and Breanna Dantino, and seven great grandchildren; Shayla Cobble, Maddox Chew, MacKenzie Chew, Madison Chew, Hudson Lentz, Sommer Lentz and Bryson Chew. He was preceded by his brother Harry Hayes Chew III (April 27, 1926 - October 29, 2000).
Private interment with military honors will be held soon at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
