Born July 27th, 1941 in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of the late Edward Braverman and Verna Braverman. A graduate of Monroe High School, he went on to earn a DMD from Tufts University. He served as a dentist in the U.S. Army, stationed in Atlanta for two years, where he met and married his wife, Mary Alice Akers in 1970. He practiced dentistry in Penfield, NY, and later in the city of Rochester, NY. He went on to own a licensed sports merchandise store called Fan Fair, with locations at both Marketplace and Irondequoit Malls in Rochester, NY. He and his wife later moved to Charlotte, NC to be close to their grandchildren.
Richard was a former member of Temple B’rith Kodesh in Brighton, NY. He was an avid tennis player, Redsox fan, all around sporty guy, and an amazing whistler- not to mention his beautiful singing voice. He loved Steve Martin and live music. He never stopped talking about that summer he spent surfing in Hawaii. Everyone who knew Richard recognized his huge heart, his honesty and kindness. He never had a bad word to say about anyone.
Beloved by his daughters and grandsons, who adored his silliness and sweet-natured personality, he never missed a dance performance or soccer game and proudly supported their interests and passions. The joy of Richard’s life was his family. He improvised elaborate bedtime stories for his children and nieces, filled with zany characters he created and named after them. They still use these nicknames today. He taught his daughters how to ski and played with his grandsons gleefully. Richard created so many beautiful memories for his family and they are so heartbroken for his departure.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Alice Braverman; his two daughters, Jill Nicole Braverman of Boston, MA, and Lisa Braverman Yarbrough, and her husband, Scott Manning Yarbrough, and their sons, Oscar Manning Yarbrough and Quentin Rhodes Yarbrough, all of Charlotte, NC; his brother, Steven Charles Braverman, of Rochester, NY; nephews, Jeff Braverman, of Rochester, NY and Dan Braverman of St. Augustine, FL; and nieces, Kristi Kadlubowski of Jacksonville, FL and Courtney Akers of Apex, NC.
A funeral will be held at 11am Tuesday, July 2nd in the chapel of the Hebrew Cemetery, 1801 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Lisa and Scott Yarbrough.
