Phil came to the Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte where he lived from 1935 until 1946. After graduating from Central High School in Charlotte, he went to live with the Clifton Westbrook family. Phil then attended Maryville College in Tennessee where he met his future wife of over 60 years, Carrol Kennette. He transferred and graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. After marrying Carrol, Phil enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
Phil spent most of his business career with Southern Bell, and having lived in Charlotte, Gastonia, Durham, Laurinburg and the then back to Charlotte, he retired from the Bell System in 1987. As a member of the Myers Park Presbyterian Church, he served as a Deacon and an Elder. Though the church, he served on numerous committees. Some of his favorite committees were working with Carrol in the church’s library and helping her spearhead the development of the Columbarium. Other outreach endeavors were Habitat for Humanity and preparing taxes at Seigle Avenue Presbyterian Church. For 23 years, he volunteered for the AARP Free Tax Aide Program. He served on the Board of Carolinas Telco Federal Credit Union. One of his passions was volunteering for the USGA as a golf course rater and as a Hole Captain in PGA tournaments. Phil was a member and an avid golfer at Carmel Country Club. But what he enjoyed the most was making thousands of golf club sets for many. Not to mention the 250 sets for the N.C. State Troopers Association! After moving to Plantation Estates in Matthews, Phil continued to actively volunteer on various committees.
Phil is survived by son, Kennette "Ken" and wife Kyle and grandchildren, Philip and Rachel; son, Rankin and wife Christina and grandchildren, Hanna Hendry and husband Christopher, Charlotte, Jenna and Cait; and great-grandchildren Caleb and Ava Hendry. Phil’s siblings include a sister, Helen Spivey and brothers, Jesse Davis, Robert Westbrook and William Westbrook.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 27th at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC 28207.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be sent to the Myers Park Presbyterian Church General Fund; The Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605; and Hospice & Palliative Care-Charlotte Region, 7845 Little Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28226.
