Paul graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and furthered his education at Presbyterian College where he earned a degree in business. He was an original Charlotte Hornets employee and enjoyed working for them until they left Charlotte. At the time of his death, he was employed by Hall Chevrolet in Chesapeake, VA, where he was well respected and made many close friends.
Earning his Eagle Scout rank was an accomplishment that he was very proud of. He enjoyed serving several years as a youth advisor at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Paul had a wonderful singing voice and sang in church choirs. He also shared his father’s interest in woodcarving. After moving to Virginia, he discovered ballroom dancing where he found a second family. Paul was a true and loyal friend to many and was always willing to help anyone who needed it.
He is survived by his mother, Doris Culp Abernathy; sister, Janet Coleman (Frank) of Costa Mesa, CA; sister-in-law, Cynthia Abernathy of Charlotte; nieces, Laura Coleman Wright (Andrew) of Atlanta, GA and Ashley Coleman of Charlotte; nephews, Grant Coleman of Charlotte, Steve Coleman of Charlotte and Andy Benton (Jillian) of Indian Land, SC.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Abernathy, and brother, Don Abernathy.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Sardis Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment will be private.
