Nicholas Posey, 89, of Charlotte passed away December 3, 2011 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House of Huntersville of complications from Alzheimer’s. He was born in Murphy, NC, the son of the late John Erwin Posey and Alma Lawrence Posey, and was the last surviving member of his family, which included his parents, sisters Leila and Woodfin Posey, and brothers John Erwin, Jr. and Tom Posey. He is also predeceased by his son, Nicholas Posey, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 64 yrs., Mildred Houser Posey; sons Steven Brent, John William and wife, Mary Jo, and Jeffrey Scott; a granddaughter, Kati Posey Toney; great-grandson, Hunter Nicholas Toney; grandson Jordan Alexander Posey, grandson Steven Chandler Posey and wife Sarah; great-granddaughter, Lydia Rivers Posey; several nieces and nephews as well as his constant pet companion, Brandi, who misses his walks very much.
Nick graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville, NC and attended Asheville Biltmore College. He could always be found perfecting his yard, and was helpful to those in his neighborhood. He was President of the Canton Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in Waynesville, NC, and a member of the Lions Club, with life memberships in the latter two organizations. He was also a life member of the Telephone Pioneers. He enjoyed a weekly poker club with friends for over fifty years.
Nick was employed by Southern Bell/Bell South/AT&T for forty-four years, retiring in 1984 as manager of business in Charlotte.
At the age of ten, he was selected as the youngest Page to serve in the NC State Legislature, serving three full terms.
During WWII, he faithfully served his country as First Sergeant in the US Army Signal Corps of the 3rd Infantry Division, of the 3rd Army, arriving on Normandy on D Day-1, serving through Hurtgen Forest, Battle of the Bulge, and under General Patton. He was awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars, each with two Oak Leaf Clusters, among other citations.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Dec 5th from 6-8 pm, at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Pineville, NC 28210. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, December 6 at McEwen Pineville Chapel; burial with military honors to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte, NC.
