Mrs. Spence, 78, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on March 16, 2011 at CMC-Main. She was born on September 9, 1932 in Chicago, Il, daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Lally; and wife to her late husband, Thomas K. Spence.
Marlene was raised in a traditional Irish-American family in Chicago, attended Catholic schools, and graduated from McCormick Business College. In 1969, Marlene relocated to Charlotte, and began a long and fulfilling career as bookkeeper with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She retired in 1994.
Marlene was a devoted mother not only to her own children, but to stepchildren and many other young people in need of a safe and supportive haven. She was a loyal friend who enjoyed a cold beer at the end of a long day. Passionate about good food, Marlene collected hundreds of cookbooks and recipes, and used them daily. She loved the Carolina coast, and was a regular visitor to Sunset Beach and Cherry Grove for many decades. Her strong faith guided her throughout her life.
Marlene is survived by her children, John P. Sides and Laura M. Helms, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Brian and Ashley; and great-grandson, Jayden. She was predeceased by her oldest child, Bill Wells.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Harry & Bryant Company, “Chapel in the Oaks”, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.
