Born in Youngstown, Ohio to Barbara and Ron Pellin, Mark’s innate talent and passion for writing was evident at an early age and matched only by his love of family and tradition. His writing skills earned him many reporting positions early in his career, including with the Washington Daily News where he met his wife, Tracy of 26 years, and ultimately as editor of the Rhinoceros Times and as an editor with the news website Headline USA.
Writing came naturally to Mark and Tracy often remarked that she watched with envy during their Daily News days as he finished all his articles early while she agonized over every word until well past quitting time. In recent years he’s focused on local and national politics, but while at the Daily News he was given the opportunity to have his own humor column, sharing stories about his family and his daily life as a young reporter.
As a young athlete, his affinity for playing football helped lead South Mecklenburg High School to win the state championships in 1981. He joined the team as a junior after his family moved from Boardman, Ohio. Being the “new kid” was difficult after leaving his childhood home and lifelong friends, but he often said that playing on the team in Charlotte was his salvation. He quickly bonded with his teammates who also became enduring companions for the duration of his life. After high school he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Appalachian State University.
Mark’s mother and brother treasure their memories of him as a devoted son, brother and friend. His cherished bond with his own family laid the foundation for becoming the extraordinary husband and father that Tracy, Olivia and Nate were blessed to call their own. He took great joy in watching Olivia and Nate grow through childhood and flourish as young adults. They plan to honor his memory by carrying on his favorite traditions and recognizing each day as a precious gift.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Pellin; and his sister, Beth Edes.
He is survived by his wife, Tracy Pellin; his children, Olivia Pellin and Nathaniel Pellin; his mother, Barbara Pellin; his brother, David Pellin; his nephew, Ronald Pellin; his brother-in-law, Dan Edes; his niece, Emma Edes; and his nephew, Ethan Edes.
