Margaret Brown McLean Levan passed away on Friday, October 1, 2010 after a period of declining health. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bertha Brown of Charlotte, NC, and by her beloved husband and the father of her five children, Flynn Brevard McLean.
Margaret was born in Kershaw, SC. She graduated from Kershaw High School in 1939 and was the valedictorian of her class. She married Flynn the same year and began her life with him as an Army wife, a life she greatly enjoyed. Flynn retired from the US Army in 1960, and they returned to Charlotte, NC, where they both became very active in St. Paul United Methodist Church. Flynn died on November 22, 1963, the same day President Kennedy was assassinated. Margaret, who had been a full time housewife since high school, was left a single mother having to raise and support the four younger children on her own. In order to provide for her family, she enrolled in Central Piedmont Community College and graduated with an associate degree in secretarial studied. After graduating, she worked for Wikoff Color Corporation in Fort Mill, SC until she retired in 1993.
Margaret enjoyed travelling and collecting antiques, especially amber glass. Her family was the most important part of her life, and she always loved hosting and attending the many family gatherings over the years. One of her lifelong dreams was to visit the Holy Land, and after retiring from Wikoff Color she was able to achieve her dream. She was an active member of Circle 6 of United Methodist Women, who often called her “Saint Margaret” because of her kindness and generosity.
She is survived by her brother, James L. Brown and his wife Nancy, and her sister, Valerie Brown Wikoff, both of Charlotte, NC; her second husband James Levan, now of Huntersville, NC; her five children, Barry McLean and his wife Janice of Wheaton, MD, Randy McLean of Fort Mill, SC, Kenneth McLean of Fort Mill, SC; Marilyn McLean of Charlotte, NC, and Byron McLean and his wife Betsy, also of Fort Mill, SC; her four grandchildren, Flynn McLean and wife Claudine of Kew Gardens, NY, Melanie McLean and her husband Rob Chung of Wheaton MD, Mina McLean of Fort Mill, SC, and Matthew McLean of Charlotte, NC; and her great grandchild, Meridith McLean Chung of Wheaton, MD, a child who was especially precious to her.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, October 5, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
