Margaret Irene Gatewood

Mrs. Gatewood was born November 7, 1928 in the Steele Creek Community of Mecklenburg County. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Gatewood, her parents, Samuel Wilson Brown and Margaret Irene Bigham Brown and her siblings Mary B. Hawfield, John Wilson "Sam" Brown, William C. "Cam" Brown and Susan Alice Brown.

"Sammy" graduated from Berryhill High School at the age of fifteen after securing a permit which allowed her to work full time prior to the age of sixteen. She was hired by Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. where in 1956 she met her future husband, Robert Gatewood. They were married on February 15, 1958 and lived in Charlotte until Bob was transferred to the Baltimore office. At that time there was no opening at Jefferson Standard for "Sammy", so she found employment with Mass Mutual. Soon afterwards, "Sammy" received a call from Jefferson Standard asking her to return to work for them.

This pattern repeated itself on several occasions including when Bob was later transferred to Los Angeles, California. When not working for Jefferson Standard, "Sammy" held a number of interesting jobs. After Bob retired they moved to Port Charlotte, Florida where "Sammy" continued working as a secretary for the First Presbyterian Church. Then, in 2003 they returned to Charlotte, where both "Sammy" and Bob took on a variety of activities at their new home in Sharon Towers.

Throughout the years, "Sammy" and Bob shared a love of attending classes at local universities, enjoying theatre performances, studying genealogy and most off all traveling.

She is survived by nieces Vivian Kramer of Potomac, MD, Alice Teele (Gerald) of Fayetteville, NC, Julia Draeger of Durham, NC, Marion Briggs (Larry) of York, SC and Susan Grace Brown of Rock Hill, SC, and nephew John Wilson Brown, Jr. (Grace) of Charlotte, NC.

A graveside service for Margaret will be held Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM at historic Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 7407 Steele Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28217.
