Malcolm was a classic geologist and a great addition to understanding the geology an important PG&E dam.  It was a pleasure to work with him solving geologic puzzles.

Malcolm was a dear friend, colleague, and mentor to me and many others here in California. I first met Malcolm in 2007 on a proposed pumped storage project and our friendship grew over the years as we worked together on hydroelectric projects throughout the Sierra Nevada and Modoc Plateau. I learned so much from Malcolm and value the time we spent talking, laughing, and arm waving about everything from fault activity and rock strength parameters to new music he was listening to. I remember his huge smile when he learned that one of his new favorite bands was also a favorite of my teenage daughter. Malcolm is truly a legend in the industry and he will be sorely missed.

A dear friend from whom we all at Duke learned much, even though we knew you were really making up geologic terms such as harpolith and axial-planar foliation at Bad Creek (we later found out these were actually real terms!!).  You educated us so much about shear zones, ancient landslides, where to place rock bolts, how to find faults/offsets in rock formations, understanding multiple sequences of metamorphosis...so much. We hesitated to borrow your Bronco because the ashtray was always overflowing to the floorboard!! And your unique laugh!! Miss you dear friend. Bud

Memories... too many were accumulated over 40 years to describe here.  But they were all good.  
- Five foot long drawing that delineated every earthquake EVER up to nineteen eighty-something.  
- And those chicken-scratch'n field composites showing every fold, crack, fault, and I can't even remember the rest but Malcolm, how the heck were you able to check them ALL from memory?
- The ride with me and Charles in the backseat of your old Bronco from Charlotte to Bad Creek and back... I still have hip problems.
- You taught me the difference between blacksburg schist and a sex-stone.
I will miss you brother.
