Lena was married to Donald B. Smith, Sr. and they had two sons, Richard and Donald, Jr.
Lena completed her formal education in Jamaica. She attended York College in Jamaica Queens, New York. Lena worked at Queens General Hospital for 30 years as a hospital administrator from where she retired. Donald and Lena moved to North Carolina from New York to be closer to their grandchildren and settled in Matthews, North Carolina.
They became members of Matthews Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for many years at the Matthews Presbyterian Hospital.
Lena extensively traveled the world, which she loved. She enjoyed her hidden words book, telephone calls were off limits during Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Lena is characterized by her loved ones as “honest, tenderhearted, and the kindest person you ever met.” She gave to others from the goodness of her heart.
She adored her grandchildren, she loved her church and talking with family and friends on the phone.
Lena was preceded in death by both of her parents, Zachariah and Linley; her husband, Donald B. Smith, Sr.; her son, Richard O. Smith; and her sisters, Etheline Cornwall and Delores Lewis.
She is survived by her son, Donald B. Smith, Jr.; grandchildren, Devere B. Smith, Richalle V. Sullivan m.(Rashad Sullivan) and Dioris L. Smith; daughters-in-law, Allison Strong-Smith and Denise Richards-Smith; and her special friend, Madeline Stewart. Lena has a host of family and friends, too numerous to mention, who will miss her.
