Joseph William Stimpson passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at home with his wife Sydney and his children by his side. Joe was born in Charlotte on August 9th, 1927, to Jessie Silna Lee Green Stimpson of Charlotte and William Kerr Stimpson of King, NC.
Survivors include his wife Sydney; and his children, Kathy Goss, Lisa Hollars and Kim Stimpson, and son, Randy Stimpson; sons-in-law, Tim Goss and Dale Hollars; three grandchildren, Jesse Hollars, Michael and Matthew Goss; nieces and nephews, and his dog, Sammy.
He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Betty Steffey, Wilma Spillers, and Gladys Davenport.
Mr. Stimpson graduated from Harding High School in 1945, and attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, majoring in commercial art and industrial design. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and served time in the Army. A sales manager of Schwam Motor Company and Courtesy Ford in the 1950’s, he received numerous awards, and special recognition for being one of the top five salesmen in the entire country. He went on to own and operate Stimpson Motor Company for 26 years, having four locations around Charlotte. He also owned and managed an Exxon Super Center. Retiring from the car business in 1980, he continued acquiring rental and commercial properties, managing them until his death. His favorite pastime was playing tennis with his wife Sydney, who was his doubles partner for over 35 years, and with his friends at Olde Providence where he was a prior member. He would often say “a can of tennis balls” when asked what he would like for his birthday or Christmas. An accomplished artist and woodworker, he often amazed his family and friends with his ability to draw, make or fix anything. He was unpretentious, with a true appreciation and zest for life. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his dog, and he loved the West Coast of Florida. His positive approach to life, and easy going nature made him a real pleasure to be with. He was a great source of strength to many people. He will be greatly missed by all of us who knew and loved him.
The Reverend Bill Smith will preside over a memorial service to be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 13th in the chapel of Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road in Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park on Sharon Amity Road.
The family of Mr. Stimpson would like to express heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Gregory Busse for years of compassionate care; Hospice; Terry and Tom Maholias; Martha Brinsko; Cathy Head; and numerous other friends for their love and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the The Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
