John Robert Turner Jr., age 36, of Mint Hill, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. John was born on October 23, 1984 in Tampa, Florida to John and Sue Turner. John graduated from East Mecklenburg High School, then Central Piedmont Community College and went on to receive a BS from UNC Charlotte.
John was a gifted athlete. He competed in all sports; but quickly realized at the age of 8 that hockey was his passion. He played through the Junior level after high school for the Connecticut Junior Whalers. John also trained for speed skating at the Olympic Training Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
When John's body stopped cooperating, and he realized he would not be able to fulfill his dreams of playing; he turned his talent to coaching. "Turnsey" soon became a treasured mentor, teacher and instructor with an enormous heart for others on and off the ice.
John leaves behind his loving parents, John and Sue Turner; sister, Jessica Turner; uncle, Jim (Marilyn) Johnson of Portland, Oregon; cousins, Ryan (Tina) Johnson and Randy (Andrea) Johnson of Portland, Oregon; great nieces and nephews; Katelyn, Ruby, Kolbe and Lukas Johnson; as well as many other family members.
Family and friends are invited to a drop in visitation Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Road Mint Hill, NC 28227.
