John David Cox passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21. He was born in Hickory, N.C., on Jan. 1, 1963, to the late Melvin and Betty Cox. He attended Texas A&M University and graduated from University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. A gifted and popular educator, John taught mathematics over the course of three decades at several high schools in North Carolina, including West Charlotte, Butler (in Matthews), Mattamuskeet (in Swan Quarter) and most recently Porter Ridge in Union County.
He is survived by his son, Joshua Cox, of Mt. Holly, N.C., his daughter, Alyssa Cox, of Charlotte, N.C., his brother, Joseph Cox (Sarah), of Montpelier, VA, nephews Jacob Cox and Brendan Cox and nieces Caroline Cox and Samantha Cox, his longtime friend and partner, Bridget Wilfong, as well as many cousins in North Carolina and Texas.
John was known for his oversized personality and ability to make people laugh and sometimes even feel a little uncomfortable. With a comedic style that was sarcastic and often ribald, John was an entertainer. He made an unforgettable first impression on everyone he met. His generosity was evident to all, and he took care of his friends, always finding the time to care and comfort in his own unique way. His positive energy brought all kinds of people together. John was truly one of a kind.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte on Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 2 p.m. Dress is casual. (Those interested in signing up for specific activities should contact the center in advance. See website at usnwc.org.)
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in John’s memory to Engelhard Baptist Church, P.O. Box 202, Engelhard, NC 27824.
