John Harold Barnes, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
Harold was born in Charlotte on August 16, 1944. He graduated from South Mecklenburg High School and shortly after he was introduced to his wife of 55 years, Karen Choate Barnes.
Harold and Karen married in1969 in Charlotte where they began their family.
In 1971, Home Federal enticed him to join their team which marked the beginning of a lengthy and successful career with the company. Over the next four decades Harold grew Home Federal into a thriving financial institution before retiring as the Executive Vice President and Board of Directors in 1998.
During his tenure, Harold received numerous awards and accolades for his leadership while never abandoning his "open door" policy to answer his own phone and meet with every employee and customer who wanted to talk with him.
Harold served on multiple boards and governing bodies, including a member of the Carolina's Carousel and a member of the Investors Title Insurance Company. He was a member of The Sportsman Club as well as The City Club. He was a longtime member of Carmel Country Club.
Another one of Harold's greatest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. He coached his son's and many of their friends all throughout their youth in various sports. He was greatly involved in all the grandchildren's sports too, he never missed a game.
Harold is survived by his wife, Karen Choate Barnes and his three children, John Harold Barnes III (wife, Karen), Michael Brent Barnes, and Ashlee Barnes Branham (husband, Reed), all from Charlotte, NC; sisters, Betty Barnes Copeland (husband, Dan), Barbara Barnes Brown; brother, Michael Barnes (wife, Debbie).
Harold is also survived by his four grandchildren, John Harold Barnes IV, Emily Lynn Barnes, Michael Reed Branham, Jr. and Harrison Barnes Branham.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, John Harold Barnes, Sr. and Gladys Polson Barnes.
The celebration of life of life for John Harold Barnes Jr.'s will be on Friday, March 24, 2023 from 11:00 - 2:00pm at South Charlotte Banquet Center, 9009 Bryant Farms Road, Charlotte, NC 28277.
