Jean was born on May 24, 1939 to the late Bert and Floye Long. A native of Charlotte, she
grew up on Monroe Road, just behind the Charlotte Coliseum, and graduated from Central
High School. She was a self-declared “city girl” who enjoyed going uptown for the symphony,
ballet, parades, or most any reason.
As an administrative assistant, Jean worked for many companies including 20th Century Fox’s
local office and Charlotte Auto Auction on Wilkinson Blvd. She enjoyed many years decorating
trees and assisting customers at Peppermint Forest Christmas Shop. Before retiring, at the age
of 80, Jean spent close to 25 years at Adesa Auto Auction where she was affectionally called
“Mean Jean” and given many accolades including Employee of the Year.
Her faith in Jesus Christ was of utmost importance to her, and she was a member of Mulberry
Baptist for over 40 years. Her family was everything, and she cherished traditions especially
ones that involved trips to the beach. Holidays were to be celebrated, and anyone who needed
a place was welcome at her table. Etiquette was always to be followed.
Jean is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill, and her children Kristin Turner (Greg) and
Christopher White (Kim); her three grandchildren Kenzie and Connor White, and Corinna
Turner; sister Beth Martin; sister-in-law Carolyn Jones (Bob); brother-in-law Jim Elam (Carey Jo)
brother-in-law Ardie Banker (Darlene); and numerous nieces and nephews who adored her. She
was preceded in death by her sisters Aeris Bingham and Irene Padgett, and brothers Harold,
Bob, and Bill Long.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 23, 2022 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at Chapel of McEwen
at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, followed by a celebration of life at
3:30 PM and interment at Sharon Memorial Park following.
Memorials may be made to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (www.billygraham.org).
