Mrs. Jeanette Elliott Newcombe Carrington (Jean), passed away peacefully on February 16, 2023 at the Southminster Retirement Community. Jean, a native Charlottean, was born on January 16, 1930, and was the daughter of Arthur Rowell Newcombe Jr. and Frances Webb Newcombe.
She was educated at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Schools, Fox Hollow School in Lenox, Massachusetts and St. Mary's College in Raleigh, North Carolina.
She married Robert Gray Carrington of Richmond, Virginia in 1952 and they enjoyed 56 wonderful years together.
Jean enjoyed her family, her friends, her home and especially her dogs. Her yard was a constant display of bird and animal activity. Deer would stand outside of her kitchen window knowing that she would feed them. Jean was also an avid and lifelong golfer, having won her first tournament, the Junior Girls Championship in 1941 at the Charlotte Country Club. She also won numerous other championships, including the North Carolina Ladies Senior title in Cary, North Carolina. Even into her 80’s, after having two hip and two knee replacements, she loved to play golf.
Jean was a charter member of Christ Episcopal Church. She also joined a number of organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames of North Carolina and the Junior League of Charlotte.
However, her primary interest was as a homemaker, living with and caring for her son, Gray Jr.
She is survived by three of her children, Robert Gray Carrington Jr., Steven Cabell Carrington and Jean Newcombe Carrington and two grandchildren, Christine Carrington Carrington and Robert Charles Carrington (Kara).
Jean is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Lydia Van Wyck Hoke Carrington; and her brother, Arthur Rowell Newcombe III.
At Mrs. Carrington's request, there will be a private family memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
