James Frederick Wittman

Mr. James F. Wittman of Charlotte N.C. passed away to be with his Lord and Savior on January 29, 2015 at Carmel Hills Retirement Community. He was born on January 19, 1931 in Utica N.Y.; the eldest son of C.M. Wittman and Esther Gerin Wittman. Jim served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. During his employment with the Bell System he worked for New York Telephone Company, Southern Bell, and AT&T. In retirement he worked for the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte at St. Gabriel Church.

Jim moved his family from Upstate New York to Charlotte in 1967. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Gubbins Wittman, who passed away on October 13, 2002. He is survived by son Brian Wittman and wife Mary Alice of St. Charles, Illinois; granddaughter Samantha Wittman of Rome, GA. Son Kevin Wittman and wife Tracy of Mint Hill ; grandsons Jason Wittman of Charlotte; Matthew Wittman and wife Christina and children Sean and Allyana of Gastonia; and sister-in-law Eileen Merritt of Matthews. James was preceded in death by brothers Ronald Wittman and Gary Wittman, and sisters Margaret Betler and Helen Tillman . He is also survived by brother Kenneth Wittman and wife Joan of New Hartford, NY; and sisters Gail Streit of Westland, MI; Nancy Wittman of Hart, MI; and Judi Evenson of Seattle, WA; brother in law Robert Betler and sister in law Jo Ann Wittman as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friend Gail Toney of Eaton, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 02, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel mausoleum of Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212 with a time of celebration for family and friends to follow at McEwen Funeral Service.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte and Carmel Hills who cared for Jim in his final days.
