He was preceded in death by his wife and high school sweetheart, Wanda R. Allen; his parents Henry Luther Allen, Jr. and Lorena Brandenburg Allen of Pageland; his brother Henry “Butch” Allen; his sister Barbara Rollings; his nephew Donnie Rollings and his niece Crystal Plyler.
He is survived by his daughter Wendy A. Craig and her husband Chip Craig and their children Katie Craig and Ben Craig, his sisters Amy Trish Allen, Mary Allen Coan, and Carolyn Allen, and many nieces and nephews, including Derrick Hall, who was one of his best friends.
Jim grew up in Pageland, SC, before moving to Charlotte, where he worked in real estate for more than
30 years. He was driven to help those in need and assisted many families to purchase their first homes
when they would otherwise have been unable to do so. He was always there to lend a helping hand to his
friends and family. He believed he could fix anything himself and always had a car or appliance that he
was repairing. He loved to surf fish at the Outer Banks and to tell fish tales. He had a ready smile and
rarely met a stranger. Jim was playful, with a wicked sense of humor and a hint of mischief that his grin
got him into and mostly out of. His senior quote in the Pageland High School yearbook was from Mark
Twain: “All great men are dead, and I’m not feeling too well myself.” We certainly lost one of the great
ones with Jim’s passing.
The family will hold a private graveside service at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers,
please consider a gift in Jim’s honor to the Outer Banks Community Foundation, 13 Skyline Road,
Southern Shores, NC 27949, to benefit his beloved Hatteras Village.
