George Phifer Houston Jr. , 80, of Charlotte, NC., passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023 at his home, while under the loving care of his family.
Born in Charlotte on January 22, 1943, he was the son of the late George Phifer Houston Sr. and Harriet Hoyle Houston. He graduated from Garinger High School, he also attended UNCC and CPCC. On September 18, 1971 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Emily Renfroe, their love for each other is as strong as the day they met.
George served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He was a prominent land developer in Charlotte and surrounding areas. George lived in the family home built in 1860, in downtown Charlotte, until the construction of Highway 277, which forced the family to move the home in the late 1960’s.
He was an avid outdoorsman and bird hunter. He enjoyed spending time in his garden and manicuring his lawn and many flower gardens. His true passion and greatest joy was being a husband, father and grandfather.
Along with his wife, Emily, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, George Phifer Houston III “Bo” and Shera of Charlotte, two daughters and a son-in-law, Allison Phifer Houston of Charlotte, and Georganne “Annie” and Michael J. Bruso of Rock Hill, SC; one sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Stan Roberts of Purvis, MS; two granddaughters, Cloe and Tiffany Houston and two grandsons, Andrew Houston and George Phifer Houston IV “Mason”; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Harriet Houston Jenkins and brother-in-law, Steve Jenkins.
He was a long time supporter of the Gideons International and a forty year member of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.
Visitation Hours will be held Friday, September 1, 2023, from 10am to 12 noon. Funeral Service at 12:30 pm., at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 3307 Rea Road, Charlotte, NC. Burial with full military services will be private for the family.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.
