George was a veteran of the United States Navy. He served proudly from 1958-1964. He sailed with fellow sailors on the USS Bon Homme Richard. George loved the annual gatherings of his shipmates each year to reminisce about their service and love of our great country. He spent many years as an independent freight broker and never hesitated to tell you, that everything you have arrived to you by truck. He loved his profession, and worked right up to the end of his life.
George could be found most Wednesdays and Saturdays on the golf course. He enjoyed the game, and especially the comradery with the fellow golfers. Lots of laughter and tall tales were told in the many rounds of golf that George played at Pine Lake Country Club and attending the Billy Bob trips. When not on the golf course, he could be found working in his yard or vegetable garden. He loved his yard when in bloom, and never hesitated to send you a picture of a beautiful flower.
George’s joy in life was his family. George was married to Kathy Johnson Cowles for 35 years. He was a devoted father to his son, daughter and two grandsons. He was always interested in every detail of their lives. He loved spending weeks at Edisto Beach. One of his favorite past times was snapping pictures of the sunset setting over the St. Helena Sound, and sending them out for all to enjoy.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge of Mint Hill, the Navy League and Matthews Republican Club.
