Gene wan born and raised in Lima, Ohio until the age of 18 when he moved to Gastonia, NC. He later attended Belmont Abby College. Upon graduation, Gene served in the US Army and was later recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency for duty. He served as the Chief of Communication in Seoul during the Korean War. In Berlin Gene was with a group that dug a tunnel under the border and tapped into the main Russian communications line. In 1967, he took on a special assignment in Thailand serving the CIA’s interest in the Vietnam War. He implemented and administered the Freedom of Information Act into a reluctant CIA and also directed the CIA’s Compensation Division. He was the director of the Agency’s recruitment and selection program for staff employees during the Reagan rebuilding period and also implemented a training program for officers promoted into senior rank. Gene served 33 years with the Central Intelligence Agency where he received the Intelligence Medal of Merit.
In his post espionage years, Gene became a Mediator for the City of Charlotte and the Equal Opportunity Commission and an Arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange. He was a Certified Instructor with the National Council on Aging. Gene also provided consultant services for those in career transitions, retirement planning and employee workshops.
Gene was a tenacious gardener/landscaper as well as mastering the art of bonsai. He always had a story to tell and enjoyed making other people laugh. Gene was an avid golfer and a long time board member of Raintree Country Club. Gene enjoyed travelling internationally and locally with his wife Marion. Gene was most happy and proud at family gather and celebrations as he enjoyed being in the company of his loving family.
Gene is survived by Marion Wilson, his loving wife of 62 years; daughters Sharron Wilson and Stacy Andrews; son Gary Wilson; grandchildren Brett Reid, Payton Andrews, Taylor Andrews, West Wilson and Wynn Wilson; great grandson Bryan Thomas Reid.
Gene had a sincere appreciation for all wildlife, therefore in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to ASPCA in his memory or the charity of your preference.
Gene will be interred at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.
