Eugene "Gene" Jackson Powell

Gene is survived by his wife, Shan Powell of Powder Springs, GA; daughters, Gina Leach & husband David of Lugoff, SC and Kristen Phillips of Charlotte, NC; brother, Sam Powell & wife Connie; granddaughters, Taylor Phillips and Addison Leach; grandson, Connor Phillips; three nieces; and loving companion, his cat Zoe.

Gene was born on Tuesday, August 15, 1944 in Charlotte, NC to Samuel & Emma Lee Powell. He attended North Carolina State University before leaving to join the United States Navy where he proudly served for four years. Gene married Shan Lee in 1982 and they had 38 wonderful years together.

He loved sports, both watching and playing. His favorite was basketball and was a lifetime fan of the North Carolina State University Wolfpack. Gene had a wonderful sense of humor and could always get you to smile with his intellectual quick wit. He was a gentle soul with a generous heart, he was always looking out for everyone.

Gene was a good provider and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His undying love and witty sense of humor will be forever missed.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Gene’s name to the American Cancer Society at donate3.cancer.org.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 2pm at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte.
