Elizabeth Everett Carlton Sockler died on April 15th, 2024 after an extended illness. Everett was born on June 20th, 1937 in Columbia, Tennessee, the only child of Myrtle Thomas Carlton and Paul Everett Carlton. She attended Columbia Central High School and Agnes Scott College where she studied art and music. She returned to Columbia after college, and met and married Joseph Porter Durham, Sr. of Little Rock, Arkansas who was on the faculty of Columbia Military Academy after his military service. Everett and Joe eventually settled in Nashville Tennessee, where they lived, worked and raised a family. Joe died in 2003.
Everett married Dr. David Sockler of Beaumont, Texas in 2011. The couple moved to Southminster in Charlotte, North Carolina to be closer to family. They spent many happy years traveling the world together and enjoying each other’s and their new friend’s company. David died in 2021.
Everett worked for many years as a floral arranger at The Tulip Tree in Nashville. Flowers were her passion and her art. Everett was also a faithful member of long-standing of Hillwood Presbyterian Church, USA, in Nashville, Tennessee, where she was a ready altar guild volunteer and session member for many years. She was an avid gardener and bridge player, and when she wasn’t making her beloved pound cakes and banana bread, she was baking the chocolate brownies that drove her grandchildren crazy! “Gran” always had something good happening in the kitchen.
Everett is survived by her children, J. Porter Durham, Jr. (Victoria) of Charlotte, NC and Martha Durham Alexander (Gary) of Tuscumbia, AL, her grandchildren, J. Porter Durham, III (Martha) of Charlotte, NC, Elisabeth Park Durham of Charlotte, NC, Everett Leighton Durham of Nashville, TN, and William Grey Durham of Charlotte, NC, and her great-grandchildren Meredith Grier Durham and Thomas Bomar Durham, and the entire Sockler family with whom she had become so close in recent years.
Everett’s family extends special thank yous to the Southminster nursing team and the hospice team that worked with her in her last few months with great care and love. Their kindness and support is without equal.
A service of remembrance will be held for family members at a later date.
