Darlene Turner Banker, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away at the age of 86 on October 17, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She left this world to be reunited with the Lord, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Darlene was born on July 10, 1937, to her late parents, Woodrow Wilson Turner, and Willie Runell Deese. A lifelong resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, Darlene graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1955, while already pursuing a promising career with Southern Bell. After a brief hiatus to raise three wonderful daughters, Darlene returned to work, at what had then become AT&T, where she diligently worked until she retired in 1993.
Darlene’s life was a testament to love’s enduring strength. She married her high school sweetheart, Ardie Banker, on May 31, 1954, and together they enjoyed nearly seven decades of marital happiness. Hand-in-hand, they faced all of life’s joys and challenges, always together. They embarked on the most amazing adventures, from getting married, building a home, and having children to cross-country road trips, hiking, camping, and square dancing on the beach. Their bond was unbreakable, and their love for one another was an inspiration.
Darlene loved traveling, especially to the beach. She would walk the shore, picking only the best seashells to carry home. She had a discerning eye for vintage goods, great deals, and fashionable matching sets. Always proud of her brightly colored nails, and perfectly coifed hair, she was the epitome of style. She loved camping, and spending time outdoors with her friends and family. Her camping club was an integral part of her life, and she cherished the friendships it brought. Always one with a sweet tooth, Darlene also made the most amazing coconut cakes. She was always willing to cut a slice, lend a listening ear, and give a kind back rub to those she loved.
Darlene cherished every moment spent with her family, from traveling to Disney, to the mountains, or the beach, to watching television in the den.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law, Don Putnam.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Ardie Banker; her three daughters, Teresa Putnam, Kimberly Wallace, and Gina Williams (Marc); her four grandchildren, Jennifer Shulskie (Eric), Patterson Wallace, William Wallace (Lillian), and Jillian Williams; her three great-grandchildren, Hudson Shulskie, Bowman Shulskie, and Daisy Wallace; and many other loving extended family members.
Darlene’s family would like to thank all of the individuals who assisted with her care in the last few years of her life. Dr. Garner, Essie, Pamela, Anisha, and so many others, we are eternally grateful for your professionalism, kindness, and compassion. You are so very appreciated.
