She was born on June 18th, 1929 in Hildebran, NC to the late Clyde Lee Stine and Florence Young Stine.
Colleen grew up in the Hildebran area and in her young adulthood she met Thomas “Dunk” Duncan, the man who would go on to become her husband. When Colleen was 23, she and Dunk welcomed their first child, their beloved daughter, Deborah. Dunk’s job as an Air Traffic Controller caused the new and expanding family to move around a lot, but they eventually settled in Charlotte in the early 1960s. Dunk and Colleen joined the Order of the Eastern Star and the Order of Amaranth, and those organizations quickly become great passions for both of them. Dunk passed away on August 11th, 1992.
Colleen continued her involvement in the organizations she and Thomas loved so much, and through those commitments, she deepened her relationship with her longtime friend John Kieronski. Colleen was lucky enough to find love a second time in her life, and she married John in December of 1994 at Thrift Baptist Church in Charlotte. Both being so dedicated to the Order of the Eastern Star and the Order of the Amaranth, Colleen and John shared a natural and beautiful connection. After close to 20 years together, John passed away on July 16th, 2012.
Colleen started working with Sodyeco, a textile manufacturer, in her younger days, and remained loyal throughout numerous name and ownership changes, and eventually retired from Clariant in the early 1990s.
One of the greatest passions and accomplishments Colleen had in her life was her involvement in Long Creek Chapter 151 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Carolina Court #10 of the Order of the Amaranth. At one time she proudly served as Grand Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth. She treasured the chances she had to network with members of other lodges around the country and she eagerly took on the challenge of raising as much money as possible for the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation.
Colleen was also deeply dedicated to her faith, and, after her last move, was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church for about the last six years of her life.
At home she was a great cook and baker, and a supportive and encouraging mother, facilitating Debbie’s piano lessons and Adrian and Don’s band and swimming practices. Despite her busy schedule and time consuming passions, she truly loved time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor Colleen’s memory include her sons, Adrian Duncan (Amy) and Donald Duncan (Rita); her grandchildren, Aaron Goforth (Katie), Billy Goforth (Amanda), Chris Quinn (Jennie), Russell Duncan, Sarah Duncan; her great-grandchildren, Thomas Goforth, Michael Goforth, Liam Goforth, Layla Goforth, Wilson Quinn, Carter Quinn, and Colleen’s sister, Betty Jo Pierce; as well as John’s family, and numerous other loving family members and friends.
Colleen has been reunited in Heaven with her first husband, Thomas; her second husband, John; her sister, Frances; her brother, A.D.; her daughter, Deborah; her son-in-law, Aaron; her mother, Florence, and her father, Clyde.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Monday, March 7th, 2022 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00pm in the Paul Helton Chapel of the funeral home with The Reverend Gene Boatwright to officiate. The services will conclude with the committal in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Colleen’s name to the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, to Carolina Court #10 of the Order of the Amaranth, to Long Creek Lodge #151 of the Order of the Eastern Star or to Durham Memorial Baptist Church.
