Christy Eve Reid, age 63, of Matthews, NC died May 8th 2014 at the Carolinas Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and the complications of a bone marrow transplant. Mrs. Reid was born February 8th 1951 in Charlotte. She was the oldest of three children of the late Carolyn Roesel Eve and Robert Michael Eve.
Christy graduated from East Mecklenburg High School where she was class valedictorian. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in Massachusetts where she spent a year abroad at the University of Geneva studying economics in classes taught in French. She went on to the UNC Chapel Hill School of Law where she was an editor of the N.C. Law Review and graduated with honors. She was a partner at the Charlotte law firm of Robinson, Bradshaw and Hinson for over 25 years, considered RB&H one of the best law firms in the country and appreciated, as does the family, their wonderful support throughout this long battle.
Mrs. Reid’s professional accomplishments include as a Law Clerk to the NC Supreme Court, Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law with the NC Bar Association, Board of Governors of the NC Bar Association and Chair of the Estate and Fiduciary Law Section, President of the Charlotte Estate Planning Council, Chair of the NC Board of Legal Specialization, State Chair of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and most recently as a Regent to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel where she chaired the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee.
Besides being acknowledged as one of the first women to become a partner at a major Charlotte Law firm Mrs. Reid has been recognized at various times by the Legal Elite Hall of Fame, by Woodward White in “Best Lawyers in America”, as Charlotte Trust and Estates Lawyer of the Year, as a “North Carolina Super Lawyer”, “Top 100 Lawyer” and “Top 50 Female North Carolina Super Lawyer”. She was elected to and served in many capacities as a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Mrs. Reid was a frequent lecturer on estate planning, administration and tax law. She published articles and authored several manuals on Estate Planning used by attorneys and financial institutions all over the state.
Mrs. Reid was a devout lifelong Christian and attended several area Lutheran churches. Her faith was very instrumental in helping her get through her long and tiring ordeal. In the past she served on the Church Council and Education and Finance Committees at St. Mark’s Lutheran. She served on the Board of Trustees of Charlotte Christian School and spent many hours while her children were growing up as a Cub Scout leader and Girl Scout volunteer.
She was a person who possessed boundless energy and enthusiasm for everything she did. In addition to her legal work and church she was a devoted traveler organizing many family trips around the country and abroad. She especially loved being at Bald Head Island and her house that she designed virtually every square inch of. But her main love and interest was for her family including her husband and partner of 40 years Scott with whom they built a great family and life together. She loved and was very proud of her three children and their spouses: Lauren Reid of Matthews, Ian Reid and his wife Becca of Parkersburg W.Va. and Olivia Linthavong and her husband Kanhka of Burlington. She was very much looking forward to being a grandmother to the two newest additions to the family, Eli Bradstreet Reid and Eliana Christy Linthavong.
Mrs. Reid is also survived by her younger brother Michael, his wife Kim and younger sister Betsy and her husband Bruce. In addition she is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss her very much.
The family thanks Christy’s many friends who have been so supportive throughout her 16 month ordeal. She had the prayers of many people who helped her keep faith and hope alive on many days when things seemed darkest. The family also appreciates the tireless work and support of all the doctors, nurses and other health care professionals at Duke University Hospital and Carolinas Medical Center who brought Christy through so many tough times and continued to work so hard at overcoming the long odds and allowed us to keep hope alive against a tough disease. It takes a special person to do that work day in and day out.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road, where the family will be receiving friends from 6-8 pm on Monday, May 12th. A funeral service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 4545 Providence Road, at 11:00 am Tuesday the 13th, followed by a reception at the church. A private family burial service will be held later that day.
