He was born in Winston-Salem, NC on October 2, 1930 to Charles E. Carter Sr. and Ruth B. Heggie. He was later adopted by Mr. Martin B. Summerlin of Winston-Salem. He grew up in Winston-Salem and attended Hanes High School. He then joined the U. S. Air Force in 1950 and served until 1954 when he was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sargent. He was a very patriotic citizen and proud of his service.
He worked for many years for AT&T, Celanese, various printing companies until he opened Fern Printing Company with his wife of 54 years. He then worked for Gold Building Products and National Gypsum until he retired. He was very active in his Temple Masonic Lodge #676 A. F. & A. M., the Scotish Rite and was a member of the Red Fez Club for many years.
As his family began to grow he was known affectionately by family and friends alike as Charlie, Uncle Charles, Buddy and Poppy to all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was known by everyone for his wonderful gardening and mechanical instincts and abilities. He was constantly tinkering and working on projects that interested him. He was always concerned for his many friends and family.
He is survived by his children, Jack Summerlin and Marla Summerlin Hulon (Grady); four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, sisters Dolores Summerlin White (Bill), Kay C. Griner, and a brother Ronald Carter (Barbara) and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Fern Summerlin; parents; a sister, Jeanette Summerlin Sapp; and a grandson, Timothy J. Hollar.
The Masonic and Military Honors Funeral Service will take place at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park at 5716 Monroe Road Charlotte, NC 28212 on Monday February 16, 2015 at 11:00 am. There will a brief grave side service following and then a celebration reception.
