Barbara Carter Kendrick passed peacefully in her sleep on June 11, 2023, at White Oak of Waxhaw, four days short of her 98th birthday. She remained very independent until the last two months of her life.
She was born on June 15, 1925, to Harry Odell Carter and Raye Rivers Carter, in Charlotte, NC. She was a life-long resident of Charlotte, except for the seven years living in Little River, SC when she was in her 70’s. She always loved the beach and wanted to live there. She also had a love for travel and was always “ready to go” anywhere.
She was predeceased by her mother, Raye Thompson (Granny), her step-father, Lee Thompson, her husband, B. A. Kendrick, Jr. and her children, Al Kendrick and Ann Kendrick James. She is survived by her daughters, Sharyn Kendrick Thackston (Howard) and Kay Kendrick Patty and son-in-law, Joey James. She is also survived by six grandchildren – Patrick Patty (Janet), Allison Spruill (Kevin), Wendy Johannesmann, Mike Patty, Eric Thackston (Kim) and Nikki Zellner (Peter), sixteen great grandchildren – Ashlyn, Ayden, Addyson, Molly, Mason, Brittany (Matt), Brooke (Thor), Van, Austin, Avery (Natalie), Chandler (Gabby), Bella, Ariel, Corey, Ronan and Owen, six great-great grandchildren – Stella, Waylon, Bella, Suheily, Myla and a future great-great grandchild – Paisley, and her sister, Cheryl Johnson (Johnny). She is also survived by much-loved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Barbara graduated from Central High School in 1944 and was married to B. A. Kendrick, Jr. on March 5, 1944. They began casually corresponding during World War II at the request of Barbara’s girlfriend who was also a cousin of B. A. Kendrick, Jr. Through corresponding they fell in love and married while he was on leave. He returned home from the Army in July 1945 and four children followed. Barbara’s desire was to be a nurse but it was not to be. However, she did work in the medical field as a receptionist at Eastway Medical Clinic for many years until her retirement.
Barbara was a member of Midwood Baptist Church for over 70 years. She faithfully worshipped and served there until she was physically unable to do so.
The family will greet friends starting at 2:30pm on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Midwood Baptist Church. Memorial service is scheduled to begin at 3pm.
