Archie Herman Rodden Jr. was born on June 12, 1934 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Archie Herman Sr. and Grace Morris. Herman, the second oldest of eight children, spent his early years working and playing on the family farm. After he graduated from Derita High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. Using the knowledge gained from this experience, Herman found a successful career with Brown Equipment as a mechanic and fabricator. He later transitioned to sales for Power Brake Service and Stone Heavy Vehicle where he retired in 2002.
More than anything, Herman will be remembered for the endless love and warmth he held for his family and friends. He met his wife, Barbara, at the fate of a single coin flip and they remained happily married for 62 years. Herman embodied a joyful spirit. He was very clever and could whip out the funniest quips with impeccable timing. He loved laughing and joking with his family, but he could also correct his children with a single glance. No matter what, Herman always loved giving warm hugs to anyone that wanted or needed one.
Herman also embodied a hard-working spirit. He could always be found tending to the farm, playing tennis, biking, hiking, or fishing - he even had a short stint with rollerblades! He remained fit and healthy his entire life. He knew how to work hard, but he also knew how to relax well. On the porch of Rodden Hill, with the wind chimes singing, the leaves rustling and the hummingbirds flitting about, Herman could sit alone or with family and simply enjoy the tranquility of his life—coffee in one hand, and a grandkid or newspaper in the other. He loved Barbara’s home cooking and his favorites were a plate of chicken pot pie, collards, pintos and banana pudding for dessert. The peace of Rodden Hill on a quiet, sunny day reflects the peace within Herman’s heart, a peace he shared with his whole family.
Even with his failing health, Herman never once succumbed to bitterness or negativity. In pain and suffering, he could still find the strength for a smile and a good joke. In good times and bad, he remained kind, positive, wise and full of endless love for his family and friends. Herman’s love will live on in the hearts of all those who were blessed enough to know him. His wisdom taught us all lessons on how to work hard and be a good person that we will carry and share for the generations to come.
A graveside service will be held at 11am on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Sharon Memorial Park located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to Charlotte Rescue Mission or SECU Hospice house of Brunswick in his name.
