Algie Lorrain Tillery

Born in a small town of Sharpsburg, NC on November 15, 1949, to the late Dorothy Gray Battle, a single parent, Algie grew up with an outgoing spirit, a kind heart, and a desire to treat others with the golden rule of etiquette. She was the oldest of six siblings and furthered her education after completing high school by attending both Manhattan Community College in NY, and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. Upon graduating from Frederick Douglas High School in Elm City, NC in 1967, Algie traveled by bus to Brooklyn, New York to live with family and attend college. Early on she exhibited traits so often associated with other women in her family; humility, tireless work ethic and fierce loyalty to family. After enrolling in college, she landed her first job with a company by the name of Baumritter, Inc, the home office for Ethan Allen Furniture Company. After one year of service with Baumritter, and a little over one semester of college, Algie pursued a professional work life in business. She landed her second job with Equitable Life Insurance Company (Formerly known as AXA Equitable) where she remained for 38 plus years.

Her noticeable work achievements while at Equitable included: Spearheading the vision, strategies and execution of Equitable’s first electronic information learning tool for enhancing organizational performance; she oversaw and designed the layout for their first inter-office web page for the company’s learning tool; designed and coordinated the technology development analysis for capturing training metrics; and designed programs to support organizational goals in the area of training. For her dedication and hard work, she was rewarded with the Employee of the Quarter and Employee of the year Award, both within a 4 year time span. Other Noticeable achievements during her life included her volunteering work with various organizations such as Christmas Bureau, KOMEN Walk for the Cure, Tools and Tots and Blumenthal Performing Arts.

Algie inspired many with her positive outlook and creativity. She had a vast knowledge in many areas and used these talents in an array of opportunities. She had an eye for home décor and was a skilled seamstress creating beautiful drapes that were evident in her home. She was also self-taught in desktop publishing and designed and created beautiful projects for Family and Friends. Some of her many passions were collecting unique teapots and attending movie screenings and cultural events. Her greatest passions and pleasure were spending time volunteering her services and helping others.

She was a wife, confidant, friend and a great mother. To her, family was everything. She was extremely close to her siblings, and they did almost everything together. Later in Life, she grew her passions for travel and became a globetrotter, traveling all over the world. Her greatest adventure was experiencing her trip to Israel.

A dear friend to many, Algie was an incredibly social person with a singular ability to engage people of all ages and races. She had boundless energy and was passionate about everything she did. Algie had a great closeness and bond with God and family and accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. She was a longtime and faithful member of Central Church of God.

Although Algie will be greatly missed by Family and Friends, we all take great comfort in knowing that she is in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and with her loved ones who proceeded her in death. Algie was married to her Husband, Horace Tillery (Deceased) for 51 years. Two sons, Danthony (Wanda) Tillery of Lancaster, SC and Brandon Tillery of Charlotte, NC. 2 Grandchildren, (Twins) Myles Tillery (Misty) and Sydney Tillery (Ivan). I Great Grandchild, Neveah Tillery; 3 Sisters – Brenda Suggs, Linda Timmons and Bridgette Battle, all of Charlotte, NC; 2 Brothers – Toney (Pearlie/Deceased) Battle, of Weaver, Alabama and Donald Battle (Deceased); Nieces, Helki Timmons, Sharde Suggs (Cierra) and Justice Gray of Charlotte, NC and Nikita Battle of Weaver Alabama; Nephews, Tory (Raquel) Suggs, Hyrum Timmons, Shardan Suggs of Charlotte, NC and Antwan Battle of Weaver Alabama; Great Nieces Janae and Janiya Fernanders and a host of Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
