"Buddy” graduated from Chapin High School. He attended Midlands Technical College where he completed the IBW electrical program. He obtained his city and state electrical licenses. He worked as a certified electrician and was a company foreman for many years. He then went on to work for the University of South Carolina where he retired. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden. He loved his family and his friends and loved to feed them. He was known for his catfish stew, fish fries and barbecues with his home made hash. He also taught the younger generation the art of butchering. This was important to him as it was a family tradition that he learned and participated in with his father and grandfather. James Edward was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church and a dedicated member of the church choir. He was also a founding member of New Hope Lutheran Church, where he took a leadership role in the construction and development of the new congregation.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter and son-in-law, Chresta and Joey Bouknight; grandchildren, Trent and Gracie Haygood; a brother, Danny Cannon (Ingrid); sisters, Kathy Frick (Don) and Tina Huffstetler (Alan)l; and 18 nieces and nephews.
James Edward was predeceased by his parents, Claude and Willie Mae Cannon and a niece, Mackenzie Cannon Huffstetler.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 11:00 am at New Hope Lutheran Church in Irmo, SC with visitation immediately following the service.
