The oldest of five children, he grew up in the Pineywoods community in Newberry County where he attended Fairview Elementary School. He graduated from Prosperity High School in 1950.
Harvey joined the United States Navy in 1951 for a four-year enlistment. He was stationed in San Diego, California aboard an aircraft carrier and saw duty in Korea, China, Japan and the Philippines.
He married Shirley Comalander on November 11, 1955 in Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, and they had four sons: Michael (Donna), Ronald, David (Lisa) and Dennis; five grandchildren: Joshua, Cannon, Sarah, Sydney and Taylor and eight great grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Johnny. He was predeceased by his son, Dennis; brothers, Robert, Joseph “Jack” and sister, Elizabeth Hill.
Prior to moving to Chapin in 1978, Harvey was an active member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church where he served as Assistant Scout Master for many years. He was also a member of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church and Woodmen of the World where he served as President. He worked at RC Motor Lines and SCE&G prior to his retirement in 1998.
Harvey loved Shirley, his family, gardening, fishing and traveling. He also enjoyed his part-time job at the University of South Carolina. Harvey and Shirley have traveled to all 48 states in the continental United States and most of the Canadian Provinces in their motorhome. They have also visited Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, the Yukon Territory and have taken many cruises.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022 at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
