Richard (Dick) Haug, age 77, passed away with family by his side on August 30th, 2021 at his home in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Dick passed away peacefully right after a visit from his good friends Joel and Cindy Bosch. He passed just a few days before his and Meroe’s 58th wedding anniversary.
Dick was born Feb. 2, 1944 in Portland, Oregon to Stanley and Alpha (Cors) Haug. Dick spent his early years in Starkweather, North Dakota. The family moved to Dickinson, North Dakota when Dick was an eighth grader. He attended Dickinson High School where he excelled in football and basketball. After high school, he attended Dickinson State College and earned a degree in Education/Physical Education. During college, Dick played quarterback for the Dickinson State Savages. He also played basketball there, and the team went to the NAIA national tournament. In college, Dick learned to golf. Golfing would eventually become his favorite pastime! He earned many golf trophies and prizes throughout the years. If you knew Dick, you knew he was an avid golfer!
Upon graduation from college, Dick taught at the United States Job Corps in Dickinson for 2 years. He then taught 6th grade at Berg Elementary for 10 years. While teaching at Berg, he started and coached the first high school girls’ basketball team at Dickinson High School. He was also an assistant coach to the high school boys’ basketball team. During the summer he coached junior legion baseball, and of course he golfed every chance he got.
He eventually left teaching and coaching to work as an independent land man in the oil, gas and wind energy industries. As the oil industry slowed down, he went to work for Frontier Directory, and then eventually went back to the energy industries to work.
Dick met many good friends during his travels through coaching, bowling tournaments, golfing tournaments, Frontier Directory and the oil, gas and wind energy industries.
Dick had a good sense of humor; he got along well with kids and he loved dogs. He was a hard worker and loyal friend. Dicks family was the most important part of his life.
In 2010, Dick semi-retired, and he and Meroe moved to Arizona where he could golf year-round. He loved the Arizona weather and golfing!
Dick married Meroe Kovash September 22, 1963. They were blessed with one daughter, Lisa, son in law, Mark and two grandsons, Mitchell and Jaden. He enjoyed bragging about his grandsons, as he was so proud of the young men that they have become.
Due to COPD and chronic leukemia, he was unable to golf the last several years. He spent time watching all of the sports on TV and loved mystery documentaries.
Dick is preceded in Death by his parents Alpha and Stanley Haug, his brother Roger and an infant daughter.
He is survived by his wife Meroe, daughter Lisa (Mark) Hatlestad, and two grandsons Mitchell Hatlestad and Jaden Hatlestad. Survivors include sister in law, Sue (Roger) Haug, nephews Mike (Peggy) Haug, Craig (Chris) Haug, Pat (Margie) Haug, niece, Michelle Rydquist, many great nieces and nephews, sister in law, Harriet Lane, Cousins, Mary Ellen Cors and Patty Oblander.
He is also survived by many wonderful friends, and the family would like to thank all of them for their love and support throughout the years.
