Raymond Joseph Fernandez Sr.

Raymond Joseph Fernandez Sr., passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the age of 84. He was the beloved husband of 63 years to Ruth Asevado Fernandez. Loving father of Raymond J. Fernandez Jr and his wife Karen and the late Susan Mary Fernandez Van Brunt. Son of the late Frank and Martha Guerra Fernandez. Brother of Loretta Stephens, Joseph Fernandez Sr. and the late Alma, Mary, Anthony, Frank Jr., Pearl and Martha. Proud grandfather of Paul Higgins and his wife Shannon and Eugene Higgins III and his fiance Monica. Great grandfather of Sarah Higgins, Emily Higgins, Nathan Higgins, Chloe Higgins, Cecilia Higgins and Paul Jr. “T-Paul”. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Known as PaPa to all, he loved living in lower St. Bernard Parish in his house on the hill that he built. An innovator in the oyster industry he was one of the first persons in the area in the early 1980s to seed beds by recycling the oyster shells from his shucking plant. After retiring from the oyster boats that he built, he cultivated crawfish, crabs and fish in his pond on his land. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Wednesday, May 4th from 9:00AM – 11:00AM, followed by a Funeral Mass in memory of Raymond beginning at 11:00AM. He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
