(Deep River, CT) - JoAnn "Joey" Lockwood, a woman known for her warm smile, engaging personality, and beautiful curly hair, passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2024, with her loving husband, Edmund Southworth, by her side. Born on December 27th, 1953, in New Haven, CT, Joey's life journey was marked by joy, creativity, and deep connections.
Joey is survived by her devoted husband, Ed, and her cherished stepdaughters, Abigail and Amanda Southworth. She also leaves behind her brother, Joe Lockwood, and his wife Dorothy, niece, JoAnn, and her husband Lou, with whom she and Ed enjoyed spending time visiting in Florida. Joey is also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Joey brought a touch of creativity to everything she did. Her clothing choices reflected her unique sense of style, often incorporating various colors. The home she shared with Ed was a welcoming space that showcased her design sense. She found enjoyment not only in creating but also in the calming practice of adult coloring books.
Joey embraced life with an open mind. From lively conversations and experimenting with fresh ingredients in the kitchen (her beloved tomato sauce, a testament to her Italian heritage and a recipe she lovingly developed), to delving into the latest reality TV show, a gripping true-crime documentary, or the ongoing drama of General Hospital, she enjoyed a variety of activities.
Fascinated by the world of dreams, Joey found meaning in exploring their symbolism. She embraced a philosophy of living a positive and fulfilling life, finding inspiration in her way. Joey also loved filling the pages of her journal with her thoughts and experiences.
Joey's faith was a strong source of support and comfort for her. She found beauty in the world around her, and she especially loved seeing sunlight break through clouds. These moments, which she called "god clouds," became a reminder for Joey that even in difficult times, she felt God's presence watching over her.
Joey's life journey was marked by joy and deep connections. She cherished her family, including her supportive husband, Ed, and her loving stepdaughters, Abigail and Amanda Southworth. Joey also leaves behind a large circle of close friends who will miss her dearly.
Joey's professional journey was as vibrant as her personality. She worked as a waitress in her early years, ensuring everyone around her felt welcome and comfortable. Later, she transitioned to a series of administrative roles, including executive assistant positions, where her organizational talents and a keen eye for detail shone through. However, her true passion blossomed when she became a Master Gardener. Alongside her business partner, Tracy McMorran, they cultivated a successful gardening venture together. The years spent meticulously caring for plants, nurturing life, and sharing their extensive knowledge with others brought Joey immense joy and a deep sense of accomplishment.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Joey fostered deep and meaningful friendships. She was part of a close-knit group called the "Covid 8." During the pandemic and beyond, this group, consisting of Tim and Phyllis Haut, Joey, Ed, Lonnie Moskal, Jane Vieira, Annie Joy, and Betta French, found solace and connection in shared Sunday dinners and other fun gatherings.
Joey's personality was infused with a touch of superstition. If she ever gave someone a wallet, she'd always slip a dollar bill inside for good luck. Dropping a utensil meant company was coming. And of course, if she ever spilled any salt, a quick toss over her left shoulder, to ward off bad luck, was a must. These little quirks were simply part of who she was.
Joey's warmth and genuine personality will be deeply missed by her loved ones and countless friends. Her smile and engaging nature were just a few things that made her so special. She had a keen eye for antiques, loved hunting for treasures at tag sales, and would often be found singing and dancing along to Motown music. Joey, a lover of cats, always had furry friends by her side, treating them like cherished members of the family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday May 11th at 1:00 PM at Landing and Main Restaurant in Deep River, CT 06417. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Connecticut Humane Society.
