Jane Scott Knowlton of Haddam, Connecticut, died peacefully at home the afternoon of Thursday, May 30. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 11, 1930, Jane was the second of Roy Scott and Dorothy Wolf Scott’s four children. She outlived not only her older sister, Joanne Scott Warren, but her two younger brothers, Roy Scott Jr. and John David Scott. Jane graduated in 1948 from Staples High School in Westport. She attended the University of Mary Washington in Virginia before transferring to the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1952. She married Carlisle “Sandy” Knowlton on October 25, 1952. College sweethearts, they were married for more than 60 years, until his death in January 2013. They raised four children together: Carlisle Knowlton Rex-Waller (John Rex-Waller), Jane Andrews (Drew) Knowlton Schaeffer (William Schaeffer), Charles Scott Knowlton (Scott), and Christopher Breckenridge Knowlton (Sally deGozzaldi).
Jane had boundless energy for her family, her friends, and her gardens. She hooked rugs and stenciled trays and chairs. She swam, played tennis, and skied. She was a substitute teacher and a leader for her children’s Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops. She memorized poetry and was strict about her children’s manners and their grammar. She had a wonderful laugh, a goofy sense of humor, an effortless elegance, and is remembered for her beauty and her kindness.
She is survived by her children and by seven grandchildren: Robert Carlisle Rex-Waller (Charlene), Caroline Taylor Rex-Waller (John Barkhausen), Emma Scott Schaeffer (Keith Wine), William Carlisle Schaeffer (Emiko), Douglas Philip Hamilton, James Andrews Knowlton, and Philip Scott Knowlton.
