Douglas Evans Walker, 69, of Old Saybrook, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23rd surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 11, 1954 he was the son of the late Douglas Blackwood Walker and Martha (Evans) Walker Bodurtha. Douglas married the love of his life Barbara (Schleis) Walker and was happily married for 33 years. Doug was born and raised in Bridgeport. The smart, responsible captain of the high school football team, Doug wasn’t above relocating Christmas trees and other affable mischief, making him popular with everyone. He grew into a dedicated family man who loved taking his kids fishing, apple picking, losing money at blackjack in St. Maarten, and watching college football. While not an especially religious man, he could often be heard asking for the Lord to “bless-us” as his kids added their own touches to various home improvement projects. In later years he could be found driving his grandkids around on his golf cart and relaxing on his boat, all the while guiding his growing family. Second only to his love for his family was his dedication to his work. In 1977, shortly after graduating from CCSU, Doug began what would become a 30+ year career at Sikorsky Aircraft. He began as an industrial engineer and quickly proved his merit, ultimately achieving the position of Vice President of Manufacturing and Flight Operations. While at times Doug felt the need to discuss matters philosophically, he would also roll up his sleeves and do whatever was necessary to bring a project to completion. Doug brought out the best in those around him, which was nothing less than he gave of himself. Doug valued every member of his Sikorsky extended family and treated everyone with respect, gratitude, and candor, regardless of their role. Doug’s accomplishments were numerous, but perhaps he was most proud of the flight school he was instrumental in establishing. This was emblematic of his nature; he was happiest when providing a path for others to succeed. That generous spirit never left him, even when facing seemingly insurmountable challenges. Doug approached life with bravery and optimism, and leaves a legacy of integrity and dedication. Because, as Doug often reminded those around him, no one is getting out of here alive so we might as well enjoy the ride. In addition to his loving wife Barbara, Douglas is survived by sons Bradd (Cassandra) Walker of Middletown, Seth (Katy) Walker of Clinton, Scott Emanuelson of Old Saybrook and daughters Sarah (James) Orlando of Glastonbury, Kristen (Matt) Griffin of Clinton, as well as 9 adored grandchildren: Corbin (USMC) and Chayton Kattermann of Clinton; Carter, Bennett, Gavin and Phoebe Orlando all of Glastonbury; Grant and Evan Walker both of Middletown, and Ronin Emanuelson of Waterford.
A visitation for Douglas will be held on Tuesday, May 30th from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home 34 Main Street, Centerbrook, CT 06409. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday May 31st at 10:30 AM at St Joseph’s Church (St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish) 48 Middlesex Turnpike, Chester, CT 06412 (Please proceed directly to the church Wednesday morning). Burial will immediately follow at Fountain Hill Cemetery in Deep River. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Doug’s name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.nationalmssociety.org). Messages for the family may be left at www.Robinson, Wright & Weymer funeral home.com.
