Kirk Frederick Lewis

Kirk Frederick Lewis passed away at the age of 69 on December 3, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and sons, Steven (Elizabeth) and Patrick; brother, John; cousin, Kathy Fowler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Maxine Lewis.

Kirk was born in Denver, Colorado, on January 4, 1953, to Victor and Maxine Lewis. The family lived in Englewood, and Kirk attended Cherry Creek High School and then graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in business administration. As a youngster, he played saxophone. Sports were a lifelong love. But throughout his life, family was most important. He was always considerate of his parents and helped look after them in their elder years, and spent many hours competing, camping, or otherwise enjoying the company of his younger brother John.

In 1978, he married Barbara Ann Hanna. Travel was a shared pleasure of theirs, and they were able to take many wonderful trips throughout their marriage, including Europe, a Caribbean cruise, Hawaii, and most recently Greece for their 40th wedding anniversary. Sons Steven and Patrick, born in 1984 and 1989, were the focal point of Kirk’s life. Their achievements and activities gave him much pride.

The Colorado mountains held special appeal and the family made numerous excursions to the high country to enjoy hiking and camping. As his sons grew and established their own lives, one of the most important things to Kirk was to visit them. He and Barbara made many visits to Nashville, San Diego and Portland. Kirk was extremely excited to have younger son Patrick return to live in the Denver area just a few weeks ago.

Kirk had followed his father’s lead of serving with the U.S. Postal Service. He started working for the Englewood Post Office when he was still in college, and served as a letter carrier for 40 years, retiring in 2015. He was conscientious and well-liked and served as a union steward and union branch vice president. Immediately after retiring Kirk began selling postal uniforms part-time for Brookfield Uniforms. This kept him in touch with the carriers and allowed him some free time as well. He continued working for Brookfield until early 2022.

Sports were an ongoing joy for Kirk – participating himself, watching his sons play and cheering on the local teams. He spent years playing softball with the post office league, and golf was a lifetime passion, playing as much as possible with his brother, sons, and friends.

Recently he had started delivering Nourish Meals on Wheels and also served as an election judge for the November election. An avid reader, he went through many books, especially in his retirement years, and was also a fast jigsaw puzzle builder.

Kirk was a quiet man of few words. He never needed a lot of material things but seemed content with what he had. He was proud of his sons and enjoyed family, friends, and simple pleasures.
