John Ed Edward Blott

John Edward “Ed” Blott, beloved father, husband and friend, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 at the age of 74 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A big man in spirit as well as stature, Ed was born Nov. 28, 1943 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Jack Blott and Margaret Hutchins.

He graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in mining engineering, and spent many years working as a professional geophysicist, beginning his career with Amoco Canada and Mesa Petroleum. In 1982, he moved from Calgary to Denver, continuing his career with Quest Exploration and Petrel Exploration.

Later in life, Ed went back to school at the Colorado School of Mines to earn his Ph.D. in geophysics. After earning that degree, he launched his own geophysical consulting firm, ExplorTech. Ed was highly respected by his colleagues in the oil and gas industry and will be deeply missed.

Ed worked hard and he played hard. In college, Ed was a gifted and multi-talented athlete, and the local newspapers were full of headlines chronicling his achievements on the basketball court, rugby field, and track. He also loved to ski, especially taking a helicopter high into the Rocky Mountains to hit fresh powder on a cold winter morning. He was an avid Colorado Avalanche fan who regular attended games, and fell in love with golf as an adult. That it was the one sport he couldn’t master made him love it all the more.

But his true love was his family and friends. He doted on his grandchildren, lighting up like a Christmas tree when they came to visit. He enjoyed socializing with his close friends, whether it was meeting for coffee in the morning at Panera or red wine and shots of peppered vodka in the evening. His circle of friends provided invaluable love and support to Ed and his family after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2009.

Ed is survived by his wife, Lynn Blott, his daughter, Shelley (Mark) Bata, his sister Mary Jane Beaudry, his stepsons Rob (Greta Petersen) Thomas and David (Hope Ives) Thomas, and his grandchildren: James, Catherine, Annie, Emily, Bennett, Zach, Carsten and Soren.

Colore Italian Restaurant, 2700 S. Broadway, was one of Ed’s favorite restaurants. Family and friends are hosting an open house reception at Colore from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28.
