Tom was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated from Annapolis High School where he played football, basketball and lacrosse. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Towson State in political science and an M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore.
Tom enjoyed a long, successful career in the telecommunications industry. He began working in 1972 as a cable TV installer for Annapolis CATV. In the late 70’s he moved to Baltimore where he worked for Caltec and then Tribune United of Montgomery County in a number of technical management positions. In 1989 he became the General Manager of Howard Cable for Comcast. In the mid 90’s he returned to the technical engineering side of the business where he led many rebuilding construction projects throughout the country as Vice President of Technical Operations. Tom retired from Comcast in 2009 and began a second career in sales for Alpha Technologies until 2017.
Tom had a passion for travel that began when he was a college student. He spent many months backpacking throughout Europe and the United States. Most recently, he enjoyed trips with his family to Italy, England, France, Africa and Hawaii. Additionally, Tom was an avid golfer and played in a variety of tennis leagues. He greatly enjoyed all types of music from bluegrass to classic rock. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Lou, daughter Katie Benson and her husband Joe, son Tommy, granddaughter Maggie and sister Betsy Ogle. He was predeceased by his sister Sarah Beach.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Thursday, September 13th at 3 pm at Rolling Road Golf Club, 814 Hilltop Road in Catonsville, Maryland. All are welcomed.
