

Juanita Bussen Hendry, age 84, died on Thursday (December 13) in her home at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. She is survived by her son Michael of Staunton, Virginia; daughter Virginia (Ginny) of Chicago; son James J with Lorraine of Arlington, Virginia; and daughter-in-law Kathleen of Catonsville; grandsons: James H, Jonathan, Justin with Rebecca, Sean, Craig, Douglas, and great grandsons Levi and Isaac, as well brothers Joseph Omer Bussen with Ruby of Kailua, Hawaii, and Daniel Bussen of Quincy, Illinois. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years and her son Stephen D. Hendry of Catonsville.
Juanita, daughter of Joseph Henry Bussen and Agnes Ehrhardt Bussen, was born in Moberly, Missouri, and raised in Decatur, Illinois, graduating from Decatur High School in 1946. She worked as a secretary until her marriage to James Davie Hendry in 1948 when she began her twenty-five-year career as a Navy wife. She enjoyed living in many places, including: Olathe, Kansas; Biloxi, Mississippi; Port Lyautey, French Morocco; Dogmersfield, Hampshire, England; Newport, Rhode Island; Monterey, California; and Norfolk, Virginia. She was a homemaker as well as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother for her children.
In her middle years, Juanita attended Old Dominion University and for twenty years was librarian at Blessed Sacrament School in Norfolk. Upon their retirement in 1988, she and her husband moved to Catonsville. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, the Renaissance Institute at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, the Gateway Club of Catonsville, and the Charlestown Quilters. She was an avid reader, traveler, and quilt maker, as well as an enthusiastic participant in the lifelong learning program at the Renaissance Institute.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Our Lady of Victory Church, 4414 Wilkens Avenue; Baltimore, MD 21229; the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 1531 Green Spring Valley Road, Stevenson, MD 21153; or St. Agnes Hospital (Oncology Department), Caton and Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229.
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, December 21 from 3-5 & 7-9PM at STERLING-ASHTON-SCHWAB-WITZKE FUNERAL HOME OF CATONSVILLE, INC., 1630 Edmondson Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10AM, Saturday, December 22 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4414 Wilkens Avenue; Baltimore, MD. Interment at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
