As my mother in law, you were always nice to me.  You always told me how good I was for Terry and that I was such a good mother.  I will always remember playing board games with you, Pop, and Terry.  I had such fun.  I remember helping you study for your GED and how you questioned the math problems.  You will surely be missed Mrs. Janet.  I was lucky enough to be your daughter in law.

MEMORIES OF MOM

On behalf of my father Bill, brothers, Billy and Terry, myself and our families, we would like to thank you for coming today to celebrate our mother, Janet Elizabeth Rosskelly’s life.

Mom was the second of four children born to Alverta Forestina Green (a homemaker) and Alfred Clarence Mercer (Baltimore City Police Officer).  For as long as I can remember, Mom was always a determined and independent woman.  I guess that was because she had to overcome two major illnesses in her young life (Osteomyelitis an acute bone infection and Tuberculosis) and endure the consequences of those illnesses throughout the rest of her life.   Against all odds, she survived both illnesses, married my Dad William and, against doctor’s advice, gave birth to me and my brothers William, Jr., and Terry.  Mom was a dedicated wife and mother for 56 years, and grandmother, teaching us to live our life to the fullest and to always strive for our dreams.
Mom and Dad worked very hard to make sure we had everything we needed and wanted in life.  She worked part-time for 20 years for the Read’s Drug Store (now known as Rite-Aid), first at Pratt Street, followed by the historic Read’s building on Howard and Lexington Street and then at the West Side Shopping Center.  She was in charge of the cosmetics department because they needed someone who looked good and loved make-up and perfume, and Mom fit the bill for both.  I remember she would get invited to perfume events from Estee Lauder and would come home with all kinds of goodies that she gave to me.
Mom would work extra hours over the Holiday’s to pay for our Christmas presents which she would purchase on lay-away at Leon Levi’s in Downtown Baltimore.  One year, Leon Levi delivered our Christmas Toys early and it didn’t matter where Mom would hide them, my brothers and I were sure to find them.  This particular year Mom put the toys in one of the spare bedrooms with a blanket over them and when we discovered the stash, she just told us they didn’t belong to us and that she was storing them for our Aunt Jean—she was pretty cleaver—she didn’t have to find a special hiding place and we were surprised on Christmas despite the early discovery.  
Mom was outspoken but very lenient with my brothers and me.  That didn’t mean she wouldn’t discipline when we needed it, it was that she allowed us to be free to explore and discover life and to use the common sense she taught us to not get in trouble.  Of course, you would have thought my brothers would have been the ones to get into trouble.  No, it was always me, the rebellious experimental wild child.   Nothing earth shattering or life altering, just a little bump in the road now and again, which Mom always tried to turn into a life lesson.  
I remember the many summer nights sitting with Mom and Gram and the neighbors out on the front steps of our Southwest Baltimore home on S. Longwood Street--air conditioning was a luxury that most people didn’t have back then, so when the evening breezes would set in, we kinda had neighborhood block gatherings into the wee hours of the morning.  Those were certainly the good ‘ole days.
Mom loved cats, so we always had a cat in our life--the most memorable ones were Herman and Harvey, both males that ruled the neighborhood.   The last cat she had was named Suzie and she love her dearly.  She also loved to crab and I remember one time we went crabbing at the Wye River.  In one rented row boat was Mom, me and Terry (who threw the oars overboard so Mom and Dad had to pay for them); Dad and Billy in the other rented row boat.  We caught 4 bushels of crabs that day and the entire neighborhood ate crabs that night—Mom and Dad were always generous and shared what they had with everyone.   
Mom loved the water and the beach.  Our Family spent many wonderful summer vacations with our Aunt Jean, Uncle Rudy and our cousins, in rented homes somewhere along the Chesapeake Bay--Nabbs Creek, Bodkin Creek, and various other Creeks.  I have many fond memories of those vacations and some of the day trips we made to Ocean City, Maryland with my Dad’s sister Aunt Sis and Uncle Bill.  We also enjoyed many years of fun with Mom & Dad at their trailor at Treasure Beach in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

Dear Family: I feel Janet is now residing in her new happy painless place with lots of old friends and family. She was a wonderful friend to mom and dad and she always looked out for me when she could. Sorry I was unable to attend the services but I know it had to be beautiful. I hold many wonderful memories of her in my heart.            Love to all

I'm Really sorry for your loss. Janet was always Happy and full of life we always enjoyed her and your family on the Visits to the Farm. Mom always loved having Family around and Loved when you came on Sundays. I used to love coming to your Grandmothers house on Christmas,and all of the Family reunions. I'm sorry we have lost touch. We love you all.

Mom,I love you and will miss you ,as I watch the pictures pass by I remember all the great times as a kid there could never of been a better mom than you I remember all the late nights watchin scary movies going downtown and even dancing with you to my wild irish rose..at the house on  longwood street you and dad were always there for us no matter what .I must of made you two worry like crazy all the stuff that I got into but you still were there .I know I will see you again.Love your son Billy Im sorry guests, had to write in here but I had too

Ms Janet was a nice lady.  I am so sorry for your loss.  She will truly be missed.  I am thankful that she is not suffering anymore and now doing the things she has not done in a long time.  She is probably dancing all around heaven.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I know it is actually a blessing that she is not suffering anymore and now resting peacefully.  The pictures you posted are beautiful and it's obvious she lead a happy life.  May you find comfort in the wonderful memories you have of her.
