Howard Albert Lutz, 93, of Catonsville passed away on September 9th. He was born in Winburne, PA, to Catharine and Garman Lutz, on May 29, 1930. He attended Cooper Township High School and graduated in 1947, and was the class treasurer at the time. He later attended George Washington University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in government.
His mother died when he was 13, and since he was the oldest of the six children, he was thrust into a leadership role at an early age. This leadership theme continued throughout his life.
He joined the Army from 1948 – 1954 and ended up in intelligence since he spoke German and Russian. This led to a job at the National Security Agency where he stayed until his retirement in 1985. He was a devoted family man and an active community member, coaching Little League baseball, serving as Treasurer of his bowling league, and an officer in a couple of HOAs. He was a proud member of the Elks where he served as Exulted Ruler while living in Severna Park, MD. He joined the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) after retirement and became president of his local chapter. He was instrumental in founding the Penn National Support Network in Fayetteville, PA. He lived a full life.
He enjoyed watching sports, playing golf and bowling, visiting his condo at the beach, and traveling. He and his wife Wanda traveled around the world and lived in Australia for two years while he was working. He was a very involved granddad, attending his grandchildren’s sports games, concerts, and milestone celebrations.
Howard is survived by his son Bruce and his wife Cathy, his grandchildren Kelly and her husband Ty, Tim, and Chris, sister Dorothy and husband Wensil, his brothers Garman and his wife Jane, and Dan and his wife Jeanne, loving companion Marlene, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Wanda, his parents and step-mother Cora Mae, his sister Kay and his brother Bob.
Public visitation will be held on Thursday September 21st from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc. in Catonsville, MD, followed by military honors and funeral service at 4:00 p.m. The burial will take place the following day at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Thurmont, MD at 11 a.m.
