Long-time Castle Rock resident, Alice Marie (nee Ullery) Higby, passed away Wednesday, February 29, 2012, of cancer.
Alice was born on a ranch in Franktown, Colorado, on January 27,
1922 to Ulda (nee Graves) and Delbert Ullery. When she was two years old they moved to Sedalia because her parents traded their ranch for a store located just across the second set of railroad tracks on the left side of the street in Sedalia, the current location of 5422 North Manhart.
The D.E. Ullery Grocery became their business as well as their home.
Their mother ran the store while their father worked at the DuPont DeNemours Company in Louviers. In addition to Alice, there were three other children, brothers, Willie and Don, and sister, Mary. All the children helped in the store from a very young age.
Alice attended grade school in Sedalia. Her first job, away from the family store, was in the 9th grade when she went to work at Johnson's Corner. She attended Castle Rock High School on Wilcox Street, graduating in 1941. During high school she worked at Woodbine Lodge and Roundup Ranch, both near Sedalia. In her senior year, she worked at the B&B Cafe in Castle Rock, where she met her future husband, John Higby II, known as Jack. During World War II, Jack joined the Army.
In 1945, Alice and Jack were married in Raton, New Mexico. They moved to Castle Rock and into Jack's mother's house on the comer of Wilcox at 7th Street, where they lived all of their married life and raised two children, Jackie and John. Jack went to work for DuPont in Louviers
and Alice worked as a waitress and a cook at the Castle Rock Hotel and Cafe on Wilcox Street. Jack retired from DuPont in 1971, shortly after the terrible explosion at that plant.
Alice and Jack were charter members of the Castle Rock Fraternal
Order of Eagles #3947 when it opened in May of 1980. In 1983, Jack Higby passed away. During the mid-1980 until the mid-1990's Alice was part owner of the Sportsmen's Lounge in Castle Rock.
Alice was a wonderful cook and baker. She also enjoyed wallpapering and painting. Her family however, was always her pride and joy. The Fraternal Order of Eagles was an important part of her life and she had been an Officer for the past 30 years. She was one of the Eagles Clowns, who marched in parades and visited nursing homes. In recent years, she was lovingly referred to as the Club Mother.
